Prognosis

Although many IPF patients can continue to live a normal life, particularly in the early stages of the disease, the prognosis is poor. Indicators of a longer survival among patients with IPF include (1):
  • Younger age
  • Female gender
  • Milder dyspnea (less functional impairment)
  • Response to therapy
  • Cigarette smoker at time of diagnosis (this result has not been explained)
