James E. Loyd, M.D.

James E. Loyd, M.D. is a medical co-director of the Lung Transplant Program and the FLOLAN Program for Primary Pulmonary Hypertension at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He is also a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt's School of Medicine.

As an established member of the pulmonary community, Dr. Loyd has written a myriad of medical articles, chapters and reviews. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Archives of Internal Medicine and Chest. Dr. Loyd is a member of the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians, American Society of Transplant Physicians, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Heart Association. In addition, he serves as chairman of the Vanderbilt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Advisory Committee.

Dr. Loyd also has special interest in the investigation of IPF when it occurs in families, with the goal to identify genetic mutations that cause IPF. His experience with identification of a genetic cause of another important lung disease, primary pulmonary hypertension, confirms that similar progress is both possible and critical for understanding the cause of IPF.

Dr. Loyd obtained his bachelor of science and medical degrees from the West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. Following the completion of his formal medical education, he completed an internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital and devoted time to the United States Navy Medical Corps.
